Developing a strategic plan for prenatal through age 25 behavioral health.

Together We Thrive

Washington Thriving is a collaborative statewide effort to develop a strategic plan for equitable behavioral health for children, youth, young adults from before they are born through age 25, and their families and caregivers. This ambitious process prioritizes collaborative engagement between individuals with lived or living experience and decision makers who will act to make the vision a reality.

Behavioral Health Matters

The foundation for lifelong behavioral health begins before birth. Brains aren’t fully developed until age 25. 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14, and 75% by age 24. These first 25 years are critical to our collective future well-being.

Behavioral health includes the emotions and behaviors that affect our overall well-being, including mental health and substance use disorders, life stressors and crises, and stress-related physical symptoms. People experiencing behavioral health challenges may struggle to navigate life, have positive relationships, and adapt to change. Behavioral health often intersects with other challenges, including homelessness, unemployment, and incarceration.

Each and every Washington child, youth, and young adult is thriving, supported by their parents, caregivers, and communities.

The Vision

All children and young people, as well as their caregivers and families, will be able to access high-quality, developmentally-appropriate, culturally-attuned care when and where they look for it.
